| On Thursday, we welcomed Poet Charles Waters to our school. Charles told us his story and shared some of his poetry with us. It was such a fun time and the kindergartners did a fabulous job being respectful listeners! |
We are scientists!
We put on our science hats this week and made observations about Isopods. We learned that isopods have exoskeletons to protect them. They have 14 legs and 7 body segments. We also learned there are different kinds of isopods. Pillbugs roll into a ball to protect themselves but Sowbugs can't roll into a ball as their bodies are longer and flatter.

We also started looking at the bodies and behaviors of snails. Next week we will be planning fair tests to see what snails like to eat and what surfaces they prefer to walk on.
Math- for the next few weeks our math lessons will be focused on the numbers 0-100!!! We want students to have a solid understanding of the number grid. For example, they should understand why the first number in each row is the same. They should be able to find any number and count up from it. They should be able to count backwards with numbers within 30. We want them to be able to use it to count by 10's as well! Fun idea: Play a "guess my number" game with your student in the car. Once they guess, tell them "my number is greater/less than that" until they know it! You can start easier (numbers within 20) and get as hard as you want!
In addition, we want students to have a solid understanding of place value. We are building numbers right now out of place value blocks to help with this. You can challenge your student by playing a different version of the guess my number game and this time giving them clues. For example, "My number has an eight in the tens place and a six in the ones place".
Have fun!
