This week in kindergarten we are practicing addition and subtraction. We are playing lots of dice games, and other partner games to build our fluency. Kindergartners are expected to be able to add and subtract fluently within 10 by the end of the year. Some great ways to work on this at home are through number stories, Guess my number games (I'm thinking of a number that is 8 more than 9. What's my number?) and other fun activities. Go fish is a fun game to play at home. Try having matches be numbers that equal 10 (or 9 or 8, etc). When kids are ready for a challenge, you can add a subtraction option in there as well! Have fun with it!
Wrapping up Science- We had a great time with our hands on learning about the properties of wood. We learned the differences between types kinds of wood, we used paperclips to sink wood and finally we made our own particleboard and plywood! This science unit was so FUN. Students also worked hard writing about their learning in the science notebooks. When that comes home, it would be a great way to review your child's learning and show them that through their science writing they are teaching others (YOU!) This science unit was a great intro to our next PBL unit about the Earth! | |
Launching our PBL unit- How can we care for the Earth? We launched this project by talking about what we already know about the earth and why the earth is important. WHY should we care for it? Each day we are going more in depth by discussing specific problems or ideas. This week we discussed garbage and where it goes after we throw it in the trash. Then we talked about natural resources and why we should conserve them. Finally this week we introduced reduce, reuse and recycle. Next week we will dive deeper into composting and recycling. We will be starting our own classroom compost bins and helping to educate students at lunch about what can be recycled and composted. Hopefully a field trip will also take place. Stay tuned :) |
